Egg fried rice, sambal fish, tofu and garlic vegetables ($5)!
Cai png lockdown delivery — egg fried rice + sambal fish + tofu + garlic vegetables. Four-component lunch plate, $5.
Thursday circuit-breaker lunch — cai png delivery with egg fried rice as the base today instead of plain rice. Egg fried rice + sambal fish + tofu + garlic vegetables for $5. The lockdown rotation continues.
We ordered:
- Egg fried rice (base)
- Sambal fish
- Soft tofu (steamed)
- Garlic stir-fried vegetables
Total: $5 (cai png combo).
Egg fried rice base — short-grain rice wok-fried with beaten egg, scallion, soy and a touch of sesame oil. Each grain coated in egg, light gold colour, slight smokiness from the wok. Better base than plain rice when you’re going to top it with a sauce-heavy dish like sambal fish.
Sambal fish was the headliner. Dory fillet pan-fried, then doused in a rich red sambal chilli paste with onion slices, sliced lady’s fingers (okra), and tamarind for sweet-sour acidity. The sambal carried real heat — proper bird’s-eye chilli kick rather than the dialled-down bottled version. The okra and onion turned silky in the sauce, soaking up the chilli flavour.
Tofu was the soft steamed kind, drizzled with light soy and sesame oil, topped with a sprinkle of chopped scallion. Clean, silky, the cooling contrast against the spicy sambal. A few small pieces of fried garlic on top for crunch.
Garlic stir-fried vegetables — kai lan or kang kong (depending on the day), wok-fried with smashed garlic, salt, and a splash of water for steam-cooking. Crisp-tender stems, just-wilted leaves.
The four components rotate beautifully across the plate. Spicy from the sambal, cooling from the tofu, herbaceous from the vegetables, savoury from the egg rice.
Overall: 4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Reliable cai png lockdown lunch — would re-order.
