GrabFood — Pineapple fried rice ($8) & Prawns pad thai ($6.50)!

Tuesday lockdown lunch — pulled GrabFood for a Thai sharing order with BB. Pineapple fried rice + prawn pad thai for $14.50 delivered. Two solid Thai classics, split between us.

We ordered:

Total: $14.50 via GrabFood.

Pineapple fried rice is the festive Thai order — yellow turmeric-tinted jasmine rice wok-fried with diced fresh pineapple, raisins, cashew nuts, prawns, beaten egg, scallion, and a touch of curry powder. Often served inside a hollowed-out pineapple half at sit-down restaurants, but the delivery version came in a box.

The pineapple chunks were the makers of this dish — sweet, tangy, releasing juice into the rice as you mixed it. The combination of sweet fruit + savoury rice + curried turmeric base + nutty cashew is the classic Thai-meets-festival flavour profile. Raisins divide some eaters but we’re pro-raisin.

Pad thai was the noodle plate. Thin rice noodles stir-fried in the classic tamarind-fish-sauce-palm-sugar blend, with prawns, diced firm tofu, beansprouts, garlic chives, and a wedge of lime on the side. Crushed peanuts on top for crunch, a small ramekin of chilli flakes for those who want extra heat.

The sour-sweet-salty-nutty balance is the pad thai test, and this one passed. Noodles had bite without going gummy, prawns were properly cooked, peanuts hadn’t gone soggy.

$14.50 for both during lockdown is fair delivery pricing.

Overall: 4.1 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid Thai delivery duo — would re-order.
