Marugame Udon Friday brunch — Sanuki beef egg udon + fried horse mackerel ($16.91 Burpple Beyond)!
Marugame Udon Burpple Beyond brunch — two bowls of Sanuki beef egg udon with marinated soft egg and tempura toppings, fried horse mackerel and Minute Maid drinks. $16.91.
Friday brunch — Burpple Beyond 1-for-1 at Marugame Udon. Went for the Sanuki beef egg udon with the fried horse mackerel add-on. $16.91 for the spread. 😋
What was on the trays ($16.91 via Burpple Beyond):
- Two big bowls of Sanuki beef egg udon — thick chewy Sanuki-style udon noodles in a clear soya-based broth, topped with sliced beef, soft-boiled egg, wakame seaweed, chopped scallions and a generous mound of crispy tempura bits (agedama).
- A small black sauce dipper on the side for extra mentsuyu (udon dipping sauce) to top up.
- A side plate of fried horse mackerel (saba) — two crispy panko-coated fillets standing up like little trophies, with the tails sticking up.
- Two bottles of Minute Maid orange juice (the Burpple set drink).
Marugame Udon’s Sanuki-style is the proper hand-cut thick udon — the QQ chew that real udon should have, made fresh on-site (you can see the noodle-machine in the kitchen).
The horse mackerel was the surprise side — saba is the small Japanese silver-fish often eaten as karaage; here panko-fried for the crispy crust. Different from typical chicken karaage, more delicate-flavoured fish.
Crack the egg into the broth, mix in the tempura bits for the textural pop, slurp the udon. Standard Marugame procedure.
Total: $16.91 via Burpple Beyond 1-for-1.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Udon was textbook (proper chew, broth had real dashi depth), horse mackerel was the unique add-on. Burpple Beyond at Marugame is unbeatable value. 😍👍🏼
