Monday brunch — Hakka YTF + soon kueh takeaway ($9)!
Hakka yong tau foo + soon kueh takeaway brunch — clear broth bowls with stuffed bitter gourd, fishball, beancurd, soon kueh, dumpling, plus instant noodles in plastic bags.
WFH Monday brunch — Hakka YTF + soon kueh delivery spread. $9 total. Multiple plastic tubs scattered across the table. 😋
What was unpacked ($9):
- Two clear soup bowls of Hakka-style YTF — with stuffed bitter gourd, fried fishball, stuffed beancurd ball, fried tau pok, fishball and bok choy. Each bowl had its own variety mix.
- A foam container of soon kueh — translucent rice flour skin dumplings filled with diced bamboo shoot, jicama and dried shrimp, finished with sweet soya sauce and chilli on top.
- Two small plastic bags of chilli sauce + sweet sauce for the YTF.
- Two plastic bags of dry instant noodles (mee kia + mee tai bak) tied off — meant to be added to the YTF soup at home so they don’t get soggy in transit.
The Hakka YTF style is different from Hokkien/Cantonese — the stuffed bitter gourd (苦瓜) is the signature item, and the broth is leaner / clearer. Bitter melon stuffed with fish paste is a polarising bite (the bitter gourd skin is the love-or-hate vegetable) but it’s the heritage anchor.
Smart packaging move: noodles separate from soup. Add when ready to eat so the mee kia stays QQ. Soon kueh is the heritage Teochew kueh that pairs well as a side.
Total: $9. Hakka YTF + dim sum side pricing.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. Stuffed bitter gourd was the underrated MVP, soon kueh skin was the right chewy thickness. Variety was generous for $9. Will reorder. 😍👍🏼
