Nasi lemak + Black carrot cake at a hawker centre ($6.90 + $4)!
Hawker lunch — nasi lemak with sambal long beans, fried chicken and otah, plus a side plate of black carrot cake with chilli paste. $6.90 + $4.
Hawker lunch with BB — went for nasi lemak + black carrot cake, $10.90 total. Two SG classics on one tray. 😋
What was on the table ($6.90 + $4):
- Nasi lemak ($6.90) in a brown paper-lined banh box — coconut rice topped with stir-fried long beans with sambal, a piece of fried chicken with that signature spice-rub crust, an otah and a dollop of dark sambal chilli.
- Black carrot cake ($4) on the green plate — wok-fried radish cake cubes tossed in dark sweet soya sauce with scrambled egg bits, preserved radish (chai poh) and chopped scallions on top. Properly dark from the sweet soya, slightly caramelised edges.
The black carrot cake is the proper Teochew style (vs white carrot cake which skips the sweet soya). The dark version is sweeter, more caramelised, and the chai poh adds salty crunch surprises throughout.
Nasi lemak with sambal long beans is the underrated topping — most stalls give cucumber + peanuts but the proper kampung version always includes a sambal-tossed vegetable side that you can mix into the coconut rice for extra spice + crunch.
Total: $10.90 for both.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. Black carrot cake was the standout — proper sweet-soya darkness, chai poh distributed evenly. Nasi lemak was solid (sambal long beans was the highlight). SG lunch classics done well. 😍👍🏼
