Saturday brunch — Mala soup with BB ($26.60)!
Saturday mala soup brunch with BB — two bowls, one mala spicy broth and one tomato collagen, with luncheon meat, frozen tofu, fishball, beancurd skin and noodles. $26.60.
Saturday brunch with BB — went for two mala soup bowls (pick-your-spice format). $26.60. The customisable warm-bowl lunch. 😋
What was on the table ($26.60 for two bowls):
- Spicy mala soup (back, darker tan-yellow tinted broth) — bobok with luncheon meat slices, fried tofu, fishball, frozen tofu cubes, beancurd skin strips, bok choy and instant noodles in the signature numbing-spicy red mala broth. Bright orange chilli oil floating.
- Tomato collagen soup (front, brighter orange-cream broth) — same line-up of ingredients but in a lighter, creamy tomato collagen base. Less spicy, more sweet-tangy umami. Pork slices, beancurd skin, fishball, frozen tofu, enoki mushrooms and bok choy.
The pick-your-ingredients format is the mala tang/soup chain model — you grab whatever you want from the chiller (vegetables, mock meat, instant noodles, frozen tofu), weigh it, then pick your broth. We split into mala (mine) + tomato collagen (BB’s, less spicy).
The tomato collagen broth was the surprise winner — those creamy-tangy soup bases are usually richer than mala once you get past the spice. Frozen tofu is the underrated MVP — soaks up broth like a sponge and turns each bite into a flavour bomb.
Total: $26.60 for both bowls.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. Mala spice was real (proper Sichuan peppercorn tingle), tomato collagen was the comforting alternative. Customisable format = always something different each visit. Will be back. 😍👍🏼
