Caught the Lazada flash deal — fried fish pao fan at $3. Cheap-lunch promo of the week. The luxurious soup-rice dish at a third of normal price. 😋
What was in the orange bowl ($3 via Lazada flash deal):
- A bowl of pao fan (泡饭) — fragrant rice drowned in a flavourful broth (the signature soup-rice format that’s gone restaurant-popular in SG since 2020).
- Generous chunks of deep-fried battered fish scattered across — golden batter-coated white fish, still crispy at the edges where they haven’t fully submerged.
- A generous scatter of chopped scallion greens for the aromatic finish.
Pao fan is the trendy SG comfort food category that turned what used to be a simple homemade dish (soup poured over leftover rice) into a restaurant-tier menu item. The good versions use proper simmered broth + thoughtfully cooked rice + topping protein.
At $3 via flash deal, this is basically free lunch — normal pricing for fish pao fan at sit-down chains runs $9-15. The flash deal made it impossible not to grab.
Quality at $3 is obviously not the same as $15 versions — broth was lighter (less collagen-rich), rice was standard fluffy white rice (not the special soft-cooked variant). Fried fish was generous though, and stayed mostly crispy.
