Lunch hawker run with BB β Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee + chwee kueh + soya bean drinks. The proper SG hawker breakfast/lunch combo. π
What was on the tray:
- A big bowl of Lorong Ah Soo lor mee ($4) in the orange bowl β dark thick gravy with braised egg halves showing the dark soya marinade, fried fishcake, bits of meat and chopped scallions.
- A small bowl of lor mee ($3.50) on the tray β same composition, smaller portion.
- A small spoon of dark sambal chilli + minced garlic balanced on the rim β the lor mee condiment essential.
- A plate of chwee kueh ($1.50 each) β soft steamed rice cakes topped with preserved radish (chai poh) in chilli sauce, the heritage breakfast classic.
- Three glasses of soya bean drinks ($2.10) β two plain white, one with bubble tea pearls visible at the bottom.
Lorong Ah Soo is the iconic hawker stall name (the original is at Lorong Ah Soo in Hougang area). Their lor mee version leans on the dark-gravy heavy style with proper five-spice depth. The braised egg is the standout β properly stained dark with the marinade penetrating through to the yolk.
Chwee kueh on the side is the SG hawker move β small bites that donβt compete with the noodles for stomach space. The chai poh topping is what makes them β sweet-salty-funky.
Soya bean drink as the chaser pairs with the heavy lor mee gravy.
Total: hawker family-meal pricing.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. Lor mee gravy was proper Lorong Ah Soo style (dark, five-spice depth, braised eggs), chwee kueh chai poh was generous, soya bean was the comfort chaser. Heritage hawker meal. πππΌ
