Salmon Mentaiko + Almond Frangipane + Chicken Ham & Cheese Croissants ($5.50 + $6 + $5)!
Artisan croissant haul — salmon mentaiko (two), almond frangipane and chicken ham & cheese croissants. $5.50 + $6 + $5.
Croissant haul from an artisan bakery — went for three flavours, two of the standout. Salmon Mentaiko + Almond Frangipane + Chicken Ham & Cheese. 😍
What was in the takeaway boxes:
- Salmon Mentaiko Croissant (x2, $5.50 each) — flaky golden croissant topped with a generous swirl of mentaiko (spicy cod roe) cream, a sheet of roasted nori (seaweed) stuck on top and a sprinkle of black sesame seeds. The savoury Japanese-inspired showstopper.
- Almond Frangipane Croissant ($6) — twice-baked croissant generously covered in toasted sliced almonds with a thick coating of almond cream (frangipane) dusted with icing sugar. The dessert-tier classic.
- Chicken Ham & Cheese Croissant ($5) — a more traditional savoury filling visible through the side, finished with melted mozzarella + chopped parsley dolloped on top.
The salmon mentaiko was the obvious headliner — the briny-savoury mentaiko cream + the seaweed strip + the buttery pastry is the kind of fusion that shouldn’t work for a French pastry but does. Doubled up because once is never enough.
Almond frangipane is the heritage twice-baked classic — concentrated buttery sweetness, the dessert anchor. Chicken ham & cheese is the lighter savoury option, more lunch-y than the mentaiko.
Total: $22 for four pastries.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Salmon mentaiko was the standout (proper umami punch), almond frangipane was the traditional crowd-pleaser, ham & cheese was solid. Bakery croissant flavour engineering is real. Will keep trying their seasonal flavours. 😋👍🏼
