Heritage dessert — warm tau suan (split mung bean dessert) loaded with crispy youtiao pieces. $1.70.

Tau suan dessert ($1.70)!

After-dinner dessert run — tau suan at $1.70. The warm mung bean classic with the youtiao topping. Heritage at sub-$2. 😋

What was in the takeaway tub ($1.70):

The youtiao-to-tau-suan ratio here was unusually generous — most stalls give 4-5 youtiao pieces; this one gave double, maybe triple. Crispy bread + warm sweet syrup is the textural magic of this dessert.

Eat fast before the youtiao softens. The crunch lasts about 5 minutes, then the bread slowly absorbs the syrup and turns from crispy to chewy (still delicious, just different texture experience).

Tau suan (豆爽) is one of the heritage Teochew desserts that’s gradually disappearing — younger food vendors don’t make it because it’s labor-intensive and not Insta-genic. Worth ordering whenever you find a proper old-school stall doing it.

Total: $1.70. Sub-$2 heritage dessert.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. Generous youtiao portion was the highlight, mung beans were properly tender, syrup had the right thickness (not too watery, not too gluey). Auntie-shop standards intact. 😍👍🏼
