Sunday Hainanese chicken rice family brunch ($28)!
Sunday family brunch at a Hainanese chicken rice specialist — poached chicken platter with chicken rice for the table, soup, sambal chilli, ginger and bean sprouts. $28.
Sunday brunch with family at a Hainanese chicken rice specialist — went the proper family-share way. $28 for the table. 😋
What was on the table ($28 for the whole spread):
- A big oval platter of poached chicken (白斩鸡) in the centre — sliced into bite-sized pieces with the skin glistening from a light soya drizzle, garnished with fresh coriander leaves and a slice of cucumber at the side.
- Four individual plates of chicken rice — that signature pale-yellow tinted rice, fragrant from chicken stock and pandan, distributed around the platter.
- Four small bowls of clear chicken broth for the table — light, slightly herbal.
- A side plate of stir-fried bean sprouts with coriander + red chilli — crunchy contrast to the soft chicken.
- The condiment trio on the table: bright red sambal chilli sauce, garlic-vinegar dip and pureed ginger — every chicken rice classic.
Hainanese chicken rice done right is deceptively simple: rice fragrant enough to eat on its own, chicken tender and moist (skin slightly gelatinous, meat just-cooked), and the chilli + ginger combination that elevates each bite. This place got all three correct.
Family-share format makes it especially good value — one big platter feeds the whole table with rice on the side.
Total: $28 for the family-style spread.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Chicken was the right tenderness, rice was properly fragrant, the chilli + ginger combo was potent. Family-style chicken rice is the proper Sunday brunch format. Will be back. 😍👍🏼
