Sencha + Oolong + Genmaicha gelato on dairy-free waffles ($5.80 + $6.80 + $12.80)!
Japanese tea house treat — Sencha hot brew, Spring's Field oolong and genmaicha gelato on dairy-free waffles dusted with matcha. $5.80 + $6.80 + $12.80.
Tea-and-dessert afternoon at a Japanese tea house — went for two pots + a special waffle dessert with BB. The tea-flight presentation alone made it worth the visit. 😋
What was on the wooden boards:
- A small glass pourer of Sencha hot brew ($5.80++) with its own white tasting cup. Sencha = the everyday green tea of Japan, grassy and clean.
- A second glass pourer of Spring’s Field oolong ($6.80++) in a slightly darker amber — floral, slightly roasty.
- The dessert centerpiece: Genmaicha gelato on dairy-free waffles ($12.80++) — a golden round waffle dusted with matcha green powder in a swirl pattern, topped with a generous scoop of off-white genmaicha gelato (made from roasted brown rice tea), finished with honeycomb crisps / hazelnut bits on top.
Genmaicha gelato is the underdog — most people order matcha gelato by default, but the toasty-popcorn-y rice note of genmaicha is the more interesting pairing with waffles. The dairy-free base meant the gelato had cleaner tea flavour without milk muting it.
The tea-pour ritual is half the experience — pour from glass into tiny cup, alternate sips between the two teas to compare. Cleanses the palate between dessert bites.
Total: $25.40++ for both teas + dessert plate.
Overall: 4.4 / 5. Genmaicha gelato was the highlight — proper tea fragrance, not just sweetened cream. Tea selection was thoughtful (sencha + oolong is a complementary pair). Dessert café with serious tea cred. 😍👍🏼
