Wanton mee + dumplings soup takeaway ($5 each + $4)!
Wanton mee with dark caramelised char siew + a side of dumplings soup with fried croutons. $5 each + $4 soup.
WFH lunch with BB β wanton mee + dumplings soup takeaway. $14 for the spread. The HK-Cantonese style wanton mee with proper dark char siew. π
What was on the table ($5 each wanton mee + $4 dumplings soup):
- Two takeaway tubs of dry wanton mee β springy thin yellow noodles with a chilli-tinted sauce coating, topped with dark caramelised char siew slices (the burnt-edge style, very HK-Cantonese), mushroom strips, choy sum and a few yellow wonton skins.
- A third tub of dumplings soup β clear milky-tinged broth with boiled pork dumplings, crunchy fried bread croutons / ζ²ΉζΈ£, bok choy and chopped scallions.
The char siew here was the headline β dark, slightly charred at the edges with a deep five-spice glaze. Different from the rosier-edged Cantonese style you see at HK-roast stalls; this was the Hokkien wanton-mee-stall style, leaning more burnt-sweet.
The dumplings soup was the surprise β fried bread bits scattered through give it a unique texture (a less common topping; this hawkerβs signature touch). Clear broth was light enough to alternate sips with the dry noodles.
Total: $14 for the spread.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Burnt-edge char siew is divisive but Iβm a fan β proper caramelisation depth. Dumplings soup with fried bread croutons was a clever twist. Will be back. πππΌ
