Afuri Ramen!

Afuri Ramen at Funan: the yuzu shoyu and yuzu shio ramen ($15.90++ each) with their signature citrus-bright broth, plus buta wing gyoza ($6.90++). The Tokyo yuzu ramen specialist.

Afuri Ramen!

First attempt to try out Afuri Ramen failed, due to the overwhelming crowd and queue. πŸ˜‹

Went again exactly a week later, much earlier this time and queued for only 15 minutes! I guess we were lucky, despite being at the start of the 2nd queue in line!

Afuri is the Tokyo ramen brand famous for its yuzu-forward broth, lighter and more fragrant than the usual heavy tonkotsu, built on a clear chicken-and-dashi soup brightened with yuzu (the aromatic Japanese citrus). It’s ramen that tastes clean and refreshing rather than rich and fatty.

The menu:

The buta wing gyoza (6 pcs): $6.90++, the pan-fried dumplings to start, crispy-based and juicy:

The yuzu shoyu ramen: $15.90++, the soy-based version, a touch deeper and savoury with the yuzu lifting it:

The yuzu shio ramen: $15.90++, the salt-based version, the clearest, cleanest expression of that citrus broth:

Both broths are wonderfully fragrant, with the yuzu giving each bowl a bright, almost perfumed lift that you rarely get in ramen. The shio in particular lets that citrus sing.

The overall spread:

The total damage: $45.55

A refreshing change from heavier ramen styles, and worth the queue. Will revisit to try out the other dishes!

Address: Funan #B1-29, 107 North Bridge Rd
Hours: 11:30am - 3pm, 5pm - 9pm

Overall: 4.2 / 5. πŸ˜‹πŸ‘πŸΌ The yuzu shio’s bright, clean citrus broth was the standout. A lighter, fragrant ramen worth queuing for, would re-visit.
