A leisurely cafe afternoon with BB at Old Hen Coffee, working through a few drinks (and a slice of cake): a black cold brew ($6), a dark cocoa ($6.50) and an orange passionfruit ($8). โ๐
What we had ($20.50 total):
- Black cold brew: a smooth, bottled cold coffee
- Dark cocoa: made with Valrhona chocolate
- Orange passionfruit: a bright, tropical fruit drink
- A slice of cake to share
We covered all the cafe bases here. The black cold brew was the clean, grown-up choice, coffee steeped cold for hours so it comes out smooth, low-acid and naturally a touch sweet, with no bitterness, lovely sipped straight.
The dark cocoa was the indulgent one, and a treat: made with Valrhona chocolate, it was rich, deep and genuinely chocolatey rather than the cloying, oversweet hot-chocolate you usually get. Bittersweet and grown-up.
The orange passionfruit was the refresher of the three, zingy and tropical, the tartness of the passionfruit against the sweet orange making it bright and thirst-quenching. The cake on the side was the sweet finish.
Ordering across coffee, chocolate and fruit meant something for every mood, and Old Hen does each properly. A relaxed, varied afternoon.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ A smooth cold brew, a rich Valrhona cocoa and a zingy orange passionfruit, all well made. Would re-visit.
