Breakfast (RM$31.95)!
A Hainanese-Western kopitiam breakfast across the border: a pork chop in onion gravy, an omelette, a slice of marble cake, soya bean and kopi. RM$31.95.
A hearty old-school breakfast across the border with BB on the Malaysia trip: RM$31.95 (around SGD$11) for the spread. π
What we had:
- A pork chop in onion gravy with peas, corn and potato wedges
- An omelette with tomato and cucumber
- A slice of marble butter cake
- A soya bean drink and a kopi
This was the lovely Hainanese-Western kopitiam style of breakfast, the kind of old coffeeshop cooking that JB does so well. The pork chop was the centrepiece: a thin, crumbed pork cutlet smothered in a sweet-savoury onion gravy with peas, sweetcorn and golden potato wedges, comforting and a little nostalgic, the sort of βWesternβ plate Hainanese cooks have made for generations.
The omelette was the simpler, homely side, soft and eggy with a bit of tomato and cucumber. And the slice of marble cake was the sweet finish, that classic swirled vanilla-and-chocolate butter cake you find at old coffeeshops, soft and buttery.
To drink, a cold, smooth soya bean and a strong local kopi rounded it out. The whole thing had that comforting, slightly retro coffeeshop feel, and at around SGD$11 for two with drinks and cake, it was lovely value.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. πππΌ A nostalgic Hainanese-Western breakfast of pork chop, omelette and marble cake, comforting and great value. Would re-visit.
