Fish & chips, ice lemon tea, regular black ($25.20)!

Sunday cafe lunch with BB — fish & chips + ice lemon tea + regular black at $25.20.

We ordered:

Total: $25.20 for the spread.

The fish & chips was the substantial main. Battered fish fillet (probably dory or haddock depending on the spot’s tier), with the chunky chips, mushy peas or coleslaw, and tartar sauce on the side. The proper British pub-style format.

The fish was the test. Proper beer-battered fish has the airy crispy shell with the slight golden colour from the high-heat fry. The white fish inside stays flaky and steamed slightly when cut open. Bad versions have soggy batter that peels off or dry fish that’s been overcooked.

The chunky chips were the standard accompaniment. Triangular thick-cut chips, crispy outside, fluffy potato inside, salt-dusted. Different from American shoestring fries; the British-pub-style thick chips need to be eaten with vinegar or ketchup for the proper experience.

Ice lemon tea was the standard cafe drink — strong brewed black tea with fresh lemon juice and sugar over ice. The local Singapore cafe ice lemon tea is usually properly brewed rather than the bottled syrup version.

The regular black (Americano) was my coffee order. Double espresso pulled clean, topped with hot water. Standard Australian-style preparation.

At $25.20 for the spread of substantial main + drinks, this is fair mid-tier casual cafe pricing. The $15-18 fish & chips + the $5-7 drinks each adds up to the standard cafe lunch tier.

The fish & chips category has steady representation across Singapore casual cafes. The British heritage and the Singapore-Anglo-Indian colonial food tradition keep the format popular. Most casual sit-down cafes have a fish & chips option on the menu.

Sunday cafe lunches are part of the weekend rotation. After the morning’s hawker brunch (the Hi Leskmi nasi lemak earlier), the cafe lunch is the small variety stop that keeps the eating across different formats.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid fish & chips lunch — would re-order.
