Happy National Day! (Chocolate cake + Lychee Oolong)
A relaxed National Day afternoon at a tea cafe: a slice of layered chocolate cake with a pot of fruity Lychee Oolong from Nantou, Taiwan.
Happy National Day! 🇸🇬 We spent the holiday afternoon the relaxed way, parked at a tea cafe with cake and a proper pot of tea.
What we had:
- A slice of layered chocolate cake
- A pot of Lychee Oolong (a fruity, floral oolong from Nantou, Taiwan)
The chocolate cake was the indulgent half: tall layers of dark sponge and chocolate cream, finished with a dusting of cocoa and chocolate shavings, rich and fudgy without tipping into too-sweet.
The lovely surprise was the tea. Instead of a teabag, it came as a little brewing set, the pot alongside a fair-cup and a small tasting cup so you pour and sip it like a proper tea session. The Lychee Oolong was fragrant and gently fruity, with that floral oolong note underneath, and being a high-mountain tea from Nantou in Taiwan it stayed smooth across several steeps. Sipping it slowly cut nicely through the richness of the cake.
A quiet, happy way to mark the day: good cake, good tea, no rush. Sometimes the best celebration is just slowing down.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Rich chocolate cake and a fragrant Lychee Oolong, a lovely slow National Day afternoon. Would re-visit.
