Hainanese curry rice ($8.80)!

A hearty weekend plate of Hainanese curry rice with BB, $8.80. 😋

What we had:

Hainanese curry rice is gloriously messy, and that is the whole appeal. You pick your toppings from the tray, then the whole plate gets drowned in curry gravy, a muddy, savoury mix of different gravies ladled over everything so the rice, the meat and the sauce all run together. It looks chaotic and tastes wonderful.

Buried under that gravy were the good bits: a crumbed pork chop chopped into pieces, soft braised pork, and cabbage soaking up all the sauce. The pork chop is the signature, that Western-influenced fried cutlet meeting Chinese curry, and the braised pork adds a soft, savoury depth. The rice underneath drinks up everything.

It is comfort food at its most generous, the kind of plate you stir all together and eat with a spoon. A touch pricier than a basic plate at $8.80, but loaded enough to leave you very full and happy.

Overall: 4.6 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Saucy, comforting curry rice with a crisp pork chop and soft braised pork. Would re-order.
