牛肉河粉 ($5): beef hor fun!
A bowl of beef hor fun in a dark, peppery broth with sliced beef, onions, oyster mushrooms and leafy greens. $5.
A warming hawker lunch with BB, 牛肉河粉 (beef hor fun) at $5, the soupy, peppery version. 😋
What we had:
- Beef hor fun: flat rice noodles in a dark peppery broth with sliced beef, onions, oyster mushrooms and leafy greens
This was beef hor fun done as a brothy bowl rather than the dry stir-fried kind, and the broth was the highlight. Dark and savoury with a generous hit of cracked black pepper, it had a real warming heat that builds as you go, the kind of peppery soup that clears your head a bit.
The beef came as thin, tender slices, just cooked so they stay soft, with sweet onions, slippery oyster mushrooms and stalks of kailan simmered into the broth. Underneath it all were the wide, slippery hor fun (flat rice noodles) soaking up that peppery gravy-soup.
It is a slightly different take from the usual sweet-soy dry beef hor fun, leaning more on pepper and broth, and it made for a comforting, savoury bowl. A spoon of chilli on the side adds a little more edge. Fair value at $5 for the beef.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Slippery hor fun with tender beef in a warming, peppery broth. Would re-order.
