卤肉饭便当 (NT$75)!

Sunday Taiwan — lu rou fan bento NT$75. Taiwan braised pork rice.

卤肉饭便当 (NT$75)!

Taiwan trip lunch: 卤肉饭便当 (lu rou fan bento) at NT$75 (~SGD$3.40). 😋

What was in the bento box:

Lu rou fan (卤肉饭) is the iconic Taiwanese comfort dish: fatty pork belly (here minced) slow-braised in soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, five-spice and rock sugar until it turns glossy, sticky and deeply savoury-sweet, then ladled over rice so the braising liquid soaks into every grain. That umami, melt-in-the-mouth pork is the heart of it.

Served as a 便当 (bento), it comes loaded with sides that round it into a full lunchbox: the sweet Taiwan sausage, a soy-stained braised egg, dried tofu and bamboo shoots all sharing the same braise flavours, plus cabbage to lighten it. At NT$75 (around SGD$3.40), it’s the kind of cheap, hearty, authentic Taiwan meal that makes you wish we had it at these prices back home.

Overall: 4.7 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Sticky, savoury braised pork over rice with a generous spread of sides. Authentic Taiwan comfort at a steal. Would re-visit.
