卤肉饭便当 (NT$75) — Taipei lu rou fan bento!

Taipei takeaway lunch with BB — 卤肉饭便当 (lu rou fan bento) at NT$75. The braised pork rice in the proper Taiwanese bento format.

We ordered:

The lu rou fan bento is the boxed version of the iconic Taiwanese braised pork rice. Same braising technique as the bowl version — finely chopped pork belly braised in a deep five-spice and dark-soy sauce until the fat goes silky and the meat melts apart — but packed into the bento format with side compartments instead of served as a single bowl.

The braised pork was the headline. Dark mahogany colour from the long braise in the soy-and-rock-sugar reduction, with the fat-and-lean meat ratio leaning slightly fatty (which is the right proportion for proper lu rou). Five-spice depth came through against the rice.

Short-grain rice was the base, with the lu rou ladled over the top corner of the rice in the bento. The rice underneath absorbed the braising liquid, giving the top layer the proper sauce-soaked glaze.

The side compartments were the standard Taiwanese bento layout:

The side compartments are the format-defining components. Each one is a small flavour and texture variation that pairs with the rice-and-lu-rou base — the cabbage adds the soft sweet, the tea egg adds the protein-and-aromatic depth, the tofu adds the soft-soy bite, the pickles add the sour-salt crunch, the greens add the fresh-vegetable component.

NT$75 (~SGD $3.40) for the bento is honest Taipei pricing. Convenience-store bentos at 7-11 run NT$65-85; family-chain restaurant bentos run NT$100-150. This was in the proper budget bento tier.

Eating bentos on the go is the proper Taipei travel rhythm. Train rides, hotel rooms, hostel common areas — the bento format is portable, complete-meal, and properly Taiwanese.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid lu rou fan bento — would re-order regularly.
