卤肉饭便当 (NT$75): Taipei lu rou fan bento!

A grab-and-go Taipei lunch with BB: 卤肉饭便当 (lu rou fan bento) for NT$75 (around SGD$3.40). 🇹🇼😋

What we had:

Lu rou fan is the dish I will happily eat every day in Taiwan, and the boxed bento version comes with all the little sides built in. The braised minced pork was dark and glossy, finely chopped pork belly simmered in soy and five-spice until the fat turns silky and the meat melts into the rice below, which soaks up all that savoury-sweet braising sauce. Comfort food, plain and simple.

Around it sat the classic bento extras: a slice of sweet, slightly smoky Taiwanese sausage, a soy-braised egg, crunchy braised bamboo shoots, soft cabbage and a wedge of pickled daikon for a sour-salt lift. Each one a different little flavour to alternate with the rich pork rice.

At around SGD$3.40 for a complete, satisfying boxed meal, it is the kind of honest value that makes eating your way around Taipei such a pleasure.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Silky braised pork over sauce-soaked rice with all the bento trimmings. Would re-order regularly.
