The Ovaltine latte was the indulgent pick. Ovaltine (the malted barley-and-cocoa drink mix) blended with milk and espresso into a hot or cold drink format. The malt-and-cocoa flavour profile from the Ovaltine provides the dessert-leaning depth, with the espresso adding the proper coffee bitterness underneath the sweetness.
Taipei bubble tea shops have expanded the menu well beyond the standard milk tea + pearls format. The Ovaltine latte falls into the “specialty milk drink” category that didn’t exist a decade ago but has become standard chain-menu fare. The malted aroma off the cup hits before the first sip.
The bubble green milk tea was the comparison drink. Green tea base brewed with milk and sweetened, with the standard tapioca pearls at the bottom. Lighter than the Ovaltine latte, more refreshing, with the slight grassy notes of the green tea coming through the milk.
The pearls in both cups were the standard chain-quality QQ chewy tapioca. Properly cooked, slightly brown-sugar-coated, with the right bouncy texture when you bite through.
Large size (大杯 / dabei) is the upgrade over the standard size — about 700ml versus the 500ml of the regular cup. The bigger format works well for sharing or for stretching the drink across a longer walk through the city.
NT$60 for the Ovaltine latte and NT$50 for the bubble green milk tea is honest Taipei bubble tea chain pricing. The Singapore equivalents at the same chain would run $3.50-5 per cup.
Last-day Taipei drink hauls are the standard travel routine. Multi-cup orders to drink through the day and on the airport ride. We picked these two as the variety pair across the indulgent-and-refreshing spectrum.
