Phad thai ($5)!

Hawker Thai lunch: phad thai, $5. A proper bargain. 😋

Phad thai (ผัดไทย) is Thailand’s most famous noodle dish, and it’s all about the sauce: thin flat rice noodles wok-fried with egg, beansprouts and chives, dressed in that signature tamarind, palm sugar and fish sauce blend that hits sweet, sour and salty all at once. Crushed peanuts and a lime wedge finish it off.

What makes a good plate is balance and texture: the noodles should be springy and well-coated rather than gluggy, the tamarind giving a tangy backbone against the sweetness, the egg and beansprouts adding softness and crunch. This one had it, with that lovely sweet-sour stickiness clinging to every strand.

The table assembly is half the fun: squeeze over the lime for brightness, scatter on extra crushed peanuts for nutty crunch, and add chilli flakes if you want heat, then toss it all together. At $5 for a satisfying plate of Thai noodles, it’s hard to beat for a quick, flavour-packed hawker meal.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Springy noodles in a well-balanced sweet-sour tamarind sauce, with peanuts and lime to finish. Great-value phad thai. Would re-order.
