叉烧 烧肉 饭 ($4)!
A plate of Cantonese roast meat rice: char siu and crispy roast pork belly over rice with a glossy dark sauce. $4.
A roast-meat fix for lunch: 叉烧 烧肉 饭 (char siu and roast pork rice) for $4. 😋
What we had:
- Char siu + siu yuk rice: char siu and crispy roast pork belly over rice, drenched in a glossy dark sauce
Getting both roast meats on one plate of rice is always the right call. This came as a proper heap, the char siu and siu yuk piled over the rice and ladled with that sweet, dark roast-meat sauce that soaks down into every grain.
The char siu had those lovely caramelised, lacquered edges, sweet and a little smoky, with a good lean-to-fat balance. The siu yuk (roast pork belly) brought the contrast: crackly crisp skin on top giving way to layers of fat and tender meat underneath. Sweet-sticky and crispy-savoury in the same mouthful, with the rice underneath carrying all the sauce.
It is generous, savoury and deeply comforting, the kind of plate that needs nothing more than a bit of chilli on the side. For $4, a properly satisfying roast meat rice.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Caramelised char siu and crackly siu yuk over sauce-soaked rice. Would re-order.
