A comforting Korean dinner with BB, sharing two sizzling hotplates: spicy pork ($9) and sliced beef bulgogi ($10.50). π
What we had ($19.50 total):
- Spicy pork (jeyuk bokkeum): thin pork slices stir-fried in a spicy gochujang sauce over cabbage, on a hot plate
- Sliced beef bulgogi: marinated beef with onion and sesame, also sizzling
- Rice, a clear soup, plus banchan: ikan bilis and cucumber kimchi
Both plates arrived spitting hot on their iron hotplates, which keeps everything caramelising as you eat. The spicy pork was the bolder one, the gochujang sauce sweet, savoury and properly fiery, with the cabbage underneath soaking up all that red, spicy gravy. Piled onto rice, it is exactly the punchy, warming bowl you want.
The beef bulgogi was the sweeter, gentler counterpoint: thin, tender slices in that classic soy-and-sesame marinade, lightly charred and savoury-sweet, a real crowd-pleaser. Alternating between the two, spicy then sweet, kept every mouthful interesting.
The little side dishes did their job too, the crunchy ikan bilis and tangy cucumber kimchi cutting through the rich meats, with the soup to wash it down. A satisfying, generous Korean meal for two.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. πππΌ Fiery gochujang pork and sweet, tender bulgogi straight off the hotplate, hearty and delicious. Would re-order.
