Sunday's reunion lunch!
CNY Sunday family reunion lunch — multi-generational home spread of family-style Chinese dishes. The annual Lunar New Year tradition.
CNY Sunday family reunion lunch with BB — the annual Lunar New Year tradition at the family home with the multi-generational spread.
The spread probably included the standard CNY reunion lunch components:
- A whole steamed fish (symbolising abundance — 年年有余)
- A whole chicken or duck (symbolising completeness and family togetherness)
- Pen cai or yu sheng (the lou hei prosperity toss with multiple ingredients)
- Braised abalone or sea cucumber (the premium-ingredient symbol)
- Long noodles (symbolising long life)
- A vegetable dish (often with eight different items for prosperity)
- Soup (clear broth or a Chinese herbal variant)
- Sweet dessert (tang yuan or kueh ku for the close)
CNY reunion meals are the most important family gathering of the Chinese calendar year. Multi-generational dining — grandparents, parents, children, sometimes great-grandchildren if the family extends that far. The format is the proper Chinese family-style with multiple dishes shared off the centre of a large round table.
The whole fish is the dish that everyone fights for. Cantonese-style steamed fish with the proper ginger-and-scallion topping plus hot oil drizzled at the end. The CNY symbolism (年年有余 / “year after year, surplus”) makes the dish mandatory.
The pen cai or yu sheng is the modern CNY addition. Pen cai is the Cantonese “treasure pot” with multiple premium ingredients layered into a large pot; yu sheng is the Singapore-Malaysian salad-toss with raw fish, shredded vegetables, sauces, and the “lou hei” ceremony where everyone tosses the ingredients high in the air for prosperity. The Singapore CNY tradition leans heavily on yu sheng, which has become the iconic local CNY dish.
The long noodles are the longevity symbol. Stir-fried noodles, dry or with a light sauce, served on a long platter where you can see the unbroken strands.
The vegetable dish is the prosperity symbol with the eight-ingredient variant (八宝 / “eight treasures”) common at CNY tables.
CNY family meals are the small annual ritual that anchors the year. After the year’s wandering through restaurants and hawker centres, the family table is the proper homecoming meal.
Overall: 4.8 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Excellent CNY reunion lunch — annual tradition kept.
