What we had:
- Two bowls of plain rice porridge (Teochew-style congee)
- Minced pork in black bean and chilli
- Sweet potato leaves stir-fried with chilli
- A chai poh omelette (egg with preserved radish)
- A piece of braised fish
Teochew porridge is the ultimate comfort dinner: bowls of soft, watery rice porridge, plain and soothing, eaten with a spread of savoury little dishes you pick at between spoonfuls. It is the kind of meal that feels like a reset after a long week.
The minced pork in black bean was the salty, punchy one, full of that funky fermented-bean savouriness and a little chilli heat, perfect spooned over the plain rice. The chai poh omelette brought that classic crunch and salty-sweet bite from the preserved radish, one of those simple things that makes porridge sing.
The sweet potato leaves were the fresh green to balance it all, stir-fried with chilli and a bit of garlic, and the braised fish was the tender, savoury centrepiece to flake over the rice. Plain porridge with a handful of well-made sides is honest, homely eating, and very easy on the stomach.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. πππΌ Soothing plain porridge with punchy black bean minced pork, chai poh omelette and braised fish. Would re-do.
