Vegetarian nasi lemak ($4)!
A vegetarian take on nasi lemak: pandan coconut rice with a fried egg, sambal, peanuts, a mock fritter and cucumber. $4.
A meatless twist on a Singapore favourite: vegetarian nasi lemak, $4. π
What I had:
- Coconut rice with a crispy fried egg, sambal, peanuts, a fried mock fritter, crispy bits and slices of cucumber
The heart of any nasi lemak is the rice, and this one delivered: fragrant coconut rice with a faint pandan-green tint, cooked so each grain is rich and a little nutty from the coconut milk. Topped with a fried egg with crispy lacy edges, it is comforting straight away.
The supporting cast is where the vegetarian version gets clever. The sambal was the real deal, sweet, spicy and deeply savoury, the thing you smear over everything. There were crunchy peanuts for texture, a golden fried fritter standing in for the usual fish or chicken, and cool cucumber slices to balance the heat. Mixed all together, you get that classic nasi lemak harmony of fragrant rice, spicy sambal, crunch and freshness.
Honestly, eaten this way you donβt miss the meat at all, the rice and sambal carry it. A tasty, satisfying plate and great value at $4.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. πππΌ Fragrant coconut rice, proper sambal and a crispy egg, a satisfying meatless nasi lemak. Would re-order.
