A sashimi craving sorted at home: a bara chirashi don delivered from a Japanese restaurant, $16.90. π£π
What we had:
- Bara chirashi don: diced salmon, tuna, hamachi, tamago and prawn with tobiko and shredded nori over sushi rice
Bara chirashi is the diced version of chirashi sushi, where instead of whole sashimi slices laid out, the fish is cut into bite-sized cubes and scattered together, which makes it lovely and spoon-friendly. The bowl had a generous mix: cubes of salmon, tuna (maguro) and hamachi (yellowtail), sweet tamago (egg), a few pieces of cooked prawn, and a sprinkle of bright tobiko (flying fish roe) on top with shredded nori, over seasoned sushi rice, with pickled ginger and wasabi on the side.
Ordering sashimi for delivery is always a slight gamble, but they did it right: the fish came chilled in a separate container from the rice, so we assembled the bowl at the counter just before eating, keeping everything cold and the rice from going soggy. The fish was clean and fresh, no off-notes, and while bara chirashi uses the offcuts rather than premium centre-cut, the variety more than makes up for it.
Scoop a spoonful of rice, fish and tobiko with a little wasabi-soy, and it eats like a proper little treat. Good value at $16.90.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. πππΌ A fresh, varied mix of diced sashimi and tobiko over good sushi rice. Would re-order.
