Sunday's brunch!
Sunday lockdown brunch — home plate at the kitchen counter. Eggs, rice, vegetables. Quiet weekend rotation continuing.
Sunday brunch at home with BB — late phase-1 reopening was around the corner but circuit breaker rules still held, so we kept the home kitchen running. Same Sunday formula, no surprises.
Today’s plate:
- Hot rice base
- Fried egg (sunny-side)
- Stir-fried vegetables
- Pan-seared protein
- Chilli sauce
Rice was the standby hot fluffy jasmine. Properly steamed in the cooker the night before, reheated to perfect consistency. The base.
Fried egg was the M-style sunny-side. Crispy white edges, runny golden yolk, centred on the plate. The yolk is the cheat that ties the whole brunch together — break it over the rice for the custardy upgrade.
Stir-fried vegetables today were cabbage shreds with carrot strips, garlic and a splash of soy. Tender-crisp, lightly seasoned. The colour break against the beige rice and egg.
Pan-seared protein was a small portion of pork loin slices, quick-marinated in soy and mirin, hit in a hot skillet for 90 seconds per side. Caramelised edges, juicy centres.
Chilli sauce on the side as always.
The lockdown weekend brunch routine had become one of the small structural anchors of life during circuit breaker. No restaurants, no cafes, no driving anywhere — just BB and me at the kitchen counter, the rice cooker steaming, the pan hissing, coffee brewing in the background.
The repetition wasn’t boring. It was the routine that made the lockdown weeks feel less unstable.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Reliable Sunday brunch — keeping the routine.
