Pork cutlet bento set ($12.90)!

Thursday lockdown lunch — pork cutlet bento set delivery from a Japanese restaurant. $12.90 for the full bento format with tonkatsu strips, rice, miso soup and pickled sides.

We ordered:

The bento format is the right delivery food because it ships everything separately in compartments. Hot main, separate rice base, soup in a sealed cup, pickles and sides in their own corners. By the time the box reaches the kitchen counter, nothing has bled into anything else.

Tonkatsu strips were the main. Pork loin pounded out, breaded in proper coarse panko, deep-fried until the crust shattered on first bite. Sliced into strips before plating so each piece had crispy edges showing. The pork inside stayed juicy because the cutlet was thin and the cook was fast.

Tonkatsu sauce came in a small ramekin on the side — sweet-soy-Worcestershire-tomato blend, drizzle-yourself style. Came with a small spoon for portioning.

Short-grain Japanese rice was the base — fluffy, properly sticky-but-distinct grains, with a small sprinkle of furikake (rice seasoning with bonito flakes, sesame and nori).

Miso soup in the sealed cup arrived still warm. Cubed tofu, wakame seaweed, a sprinkle of scallion floating on top. Sip-able from the cup or pour into a small bowl beside the bento.

Pickles compartment had a few slices of pickled daikon (yellow) and pickled ginger. Palate-cleansing between bites of fried pork.

A small ramekin of shredded cabbage with sesame dressing rounded out the side dishes.

$12.90 for a full bento delivery during lockdown is fair Japanese-chain pricing.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Strong pork cutlet bento — would re-order.
