Late lunch after badminton ($3)!

Thursday late lunch with BB — $3 hawker plate after the morning’s badminton session. The post-exercise hawker refuel during a quiet afternoon.

We ordered:

The $3 hawker plate is the rare entry-level pricing in late 2020. Most stalls have moved their plates to $4-5 territory; finding $3 plates still requires hitting the older stalls run by aunties or uncles who’ve held the line on pricing.

The post-badminton refuel slot is one of those particular eating moments. You’ve burned a couple hundred calories in the hour-long session, you’re slightly dehydrated, and you’re hungry in a more focused way than the regular weekday lunch hunger. The body wants protein, carbs, salt — three things the $3 hawker plate delivers.

The plate could’ve been any of the entry-level hawker options at this pricing — basic fishball noodles, simple bee hoon soup, or a wanton mee at the cheaper stalls. The exact stall doesn’t matter much because at $3 the quality variation is smaller than at higher pricing tiers.

The combination of post-exercise hunger plus a $3 hawker plate is one of the cleaner pleasure-to-cost ratios in Singapore. The hawker centres deliver value that no chain or restaurant can match at this pricing tier.

The badminton + late lunch combination became one of the regular phase-2 routines through October. Tuesday/Thursday morning badminton sessions, post-game showers, late lunch at the hawker centre near the courts.

The pattern took shape because both badminton and the hawker centres were phase-2 reopened and accessible. Pre-pandemic the same routine would’ve been the gym + cafeteria; phase 2 gave us back the sports courts + hawker centres combination, which we genuinely prefer.

We sat at the hawker table, ate slow, listened to the afternoon energy of the food court — lunch crowd thinning, the lull before the dinner shift.

Some routines work better than others. The post-badminton late lunch is one of the better ones we’d kept up.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Reliable post-badminton late lunch — keeping the routine.
