Sunday lunch with BB — Jia Xiang Mee Gold at $9.90. The premium upgraded bowl from the Hakka-Hokkien noodle stall.
We ordered:
- Jia Xiang Mee Gold — $9.90
Jia Xiang (家乡) translates to “hometown” — the stall’s branding leans into the nostalgia-for-home theme that Hakka-Hokkien noodle stalls often play up. The standard Jia Xiang Mee is the base bowl; the Gold variant is the premium tier with upgraded toppings.
The Gold bowl came with the signature noodles plus a generous spread of premium toppings. The exact composition varies by stall but typically includes prawns, soft-boiled egg, char siew or pork slices, and a more substantial protein component than the base bowl.
The noodles were the foundation. Probably mee pok (Hakka thin yellow noodles) or fishball noodles base, cooked to QQ chew, tossed in the stall’s signature sauce mix. The sauce profile leaned the sweet-soy-vinegar-chilli direction, with proper pork lard for body and umami depth.
The premium toppings differentiated this from the standard bowl. Two prawns (de-shelled, properly cooked, snappy texture), char siew slices or sliced pork (lacquered with the Hakka sweet glaze), a soft-boiled egg halved with the runny yolk visible, blanched leafy greens, and a generous handful of crispy ikan bilis or fried shallot.
A side bowl of clear soup with wantons (or fishballs depending on the day) came alongside, in the standard Hakka noodle stall format. The clear soup is the palate cleanser between bites of the heavier sauced noodles.
The Gold variant at $9.90 is the premium pricing for a hawker-tier upgrade. The standard bowl runs $5-6; the Gold doubles the price for the upgraded toppings and the larger portion.
At $9.90 this is fair hawker premium pricing — comparable to chain restaurant noodle bowls but with proper hawker execution and a more substantial topping spread.
Sunday lunch at a Hakka noodle stall is the kind of home-style Singapore meal that defines the city’s hawker culture. The $9.90 spend is double our standard $5 hawker plate but the premium toppings deliver enough additional value to justify the upgrade occasionally.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid Jia Xiang Mee Gold — would re-order.
