We ordered:
- Peanut soup — $1.40
Peanut soup is the classic Cantonese dessert — peanuts blended down into a thick, creamy, faintly nutty sweet paste, simmered with rock sugar until smooth. The good versions have that velvety texture from properly soaked and blended peanuts; the bad versions taste like watered-down peanut butter. This stall does the proper version.
The soup arrived in a small bowl, still steaming. The colour was the pale-cream beige of properly blended peanuts, with the slightly viscous consistency that says hours of simmering rather than quick blending. Sweetness was restrained — you could taste the peanut character through the sugar.
The eating ritual is the slow spoon. You take a spoonful, let the warm thick soup coat your tongue, taste the peanut character, then move to the next. The whole bowl gets eaten in about ten minutes, not because it’s small but because the dessert rewards slow pacing.
At $1.40 a bowl this is honest hawker dessert pricing. The old-school Cantonese dessert stalls have been keeping their prices low for years, and finding hua sheng hu at sub-$2 territory is one of the small Singapore food joys.
These old-school dessert stalls are quietly disappearing as fewer aunties and uncles take over the business. Peanut soup, tau suan, almond paste, sesame paste — the whole Cantonese tong sui category is slowly thinning. Worth supporting actively when you find a stall that still does the proper version.
The October dessert run also lined up with the start of the cooler weather. Hot peanut soup in slightly cooler weather is the right combination — the warmth from the soup feels like it’s restoring something internal that the air temperature has taken away.
We sat at the dessert stall’s small table area, ate slow. Some desserts need to be eaten that way.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Excellent peanut soup at honest pricing — would re-order weekly.
