What we had:
- Peanut soup (花生糊)
Peanut soup is a Cantonese tong sui I have a soft spot for, peanuts blended and simmered down with rock sugar into a thick, creamy, faintly nutty paste. The good versions have that velvety, smooth texture from properly soaked and blended nuts; the lazy ones taste like watered-down peanut butter. This stall does it the proper way.
The bowl arrived still steaming, that pale-cream beige of well-blended peanuts, with a slightly thick, almost gel-like consistency that tells you it has simmered for hours. Best of all, it was not too sweet, so the peanut flavour actually comes through rather than being drowned in sugar.
It is a dessert that rewards slow eating, a spoonful at a time, letting the warm soup coat your tongue. Warm peanut soup as the weather cools down is one of those small, comforting pleasures.
At $1.40 a bowl it is honest old-school pricing, the kind that is getting rarer as these Cantonese dessert stalls quietly disappear. Worth seeking out and supporting while you can.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Velvety, gently sweet peanut soup with real peanut flavour, comforting and cheap. Would re-order weekly.
