Mixed Veg Rice ($5.20)!

Lunch at the Bugis hawker. Mixed veg rice (cai png), $5.20. πŸ˜‹πŸ‘πŸΌ

What was on the plate:

Cai png (ζ‚θœι₯, literally β€œmixed vegetable rice”) is the Singapore economy rice format. You walk up to the stall, point at the items in the metal trays, the auntie/uncle spoons them onto a plate next to your rice. Pricing is by piece count, not portion size, which is why the bill is always a mystery until you reach the cashier.

The cai png canonical pick lineup:

The cai png economics are the invisible algorithm of Singapore lunch budgeting. Two dishes + rice usually runs $3.50-$4.50. Three dishes + rice usually $4.50-$6. The line between β€œregular” and β€œpremium” picks (sweet-sour pork vs vegetables) silently moves your bill up by 80 cents to $1.50 per pick.

At $5.20 in the Bugis area, this is mid-range cai png for what looks like 4 picks plus curry gravy. Reasonable for the variety on the plate.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. πŸ˜‹πŸ‘πŸΌ Solid Bugis cai png. The curry fish cakes were the surprise pick. Would re-order.
