Jumbo wanton mee ($8)!

Lunch today: jumbo wanton mee at a Golden Mile hawker for $8. The loaded version. 😋

What was on the plate ($8):

The base is classic dry wanton mee: springy thin mee kia tossed in a dark, savoury-sweet sauce so it coats rather than drowns, with greens on the side. But the “jumbo” tag earns its keep, this is the loaded, premium version of the dish.

The star is the char siew. Rather than a few mean slivers, you get a generous fan of slices, properly done with caramelised charred edges, a glossy mahogany glaze and a rosy pink centre, that sweet-smoky barbecued pork is what makes or breaks a plate of wanton mee. The jumbo wantons are full-size, meaty mouthfuls (a step up from the dainty dim-sum-sized ones), and the fried beancurd skin adds crunch. At $8 it’s pricier than your average hawker plate, but you can see where the money went.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. The char siew had proper char and mahogany glaze, the jumbo wantons were satisfying full bites, and the foo chuk added crunch. A premium hawker wanton mee. 😋👍🏼
