Thailand Chicken Rice — roast chicken rice ($5)!

Lunch today: Thailand Chicken Rice at Golden Mile, $5. The Thai take on chicken rice. 😋

What was on the table ($5):

Golden Mile Complex has long been Singapore’s “Little Thailand”, so a Thai-leaning chicken rice here makes perfect sense. The dish sits somewhere between the Thai khao man gai and our Hainanese version: same fragrant rice cooked in chicken stock, but the chicken comes roasted and crucially is crowned with a generous spoon of fried garlic, which is the giveaway Thai touch (you’d usually get chopped spring onion on the Hainanese plate).

The other tell is the chilli. Instead of the local trio of pounded chilli, ginger and lime, you get a Thai sweet chilli sauce, sweeter and tangier, with a garlicky kick that suits the roast bird. The rice stays properly fragrant and slightly oily, and the bowl of clear chicken broth on the side rounds it out. A tasty cross-cultural plate, and great value at $5.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. The roast chicken with fried garlic was the standout Thai twist, the rice was properly fragrant, and the sweet chilli balanced it nicely. 😋👍🏼
