BatterCatch is the British chippie concept at VivoCity, 1 HarbourFront Walk, right by HarbourFront MRT. This is their flagship, the one they opened first back in 2024 before the other outlets followed. The whole place is done up beach-shack style, and everything is halal.
The dory is the entry point of their fish range, which runs up through haddock, barramundi and halibut. At $13.90++ it is the one to get if you are not fussed about a premium fish, and the fillet that came out was long enough to hang off both ends of the chips underneath it.
The batter is the part worth paying attention to. It came out a deep golden, thin and blistered rather than thick and bready, and it crackled when cut instead of going soft and soggy against the fish. Underneath, the dory was white and flaky, mild as dory always is, so the seasoning has to come from the batter and the sauces. The chips were thick-cut, fluffy in the middle.
Three dips came on the side: mushy peas, coarse and bright green; tartar sauce, thick and flecked with herbs and capers; and a curry sauce, the orange-brown chip-shop kind that is the best of the three. There is a malt vinegar dispenser on the table too, which is the finishing touch a lot of places here forget.
The Lychee Lagoon Tea was the right call in this heat, a tall iced tea with lychee through it, mint on top and a dried citrus wheel, sweet but not syrupy.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Crackly batter, chunky chips and a curry sauce worth ordering for. Next time I want to try the barramundi.
