Braised duck rice at a hawker stall ($4.50)!
Hawker braised duck rice — generous sliced braised duck, tau kwa and braised yam rice with dark herbal gravy. $4.50.
Lunch hit — braised duck rice at a hawker stall, $4.50. The Teochew classic that always satisfies. 😋
What was on the red plate ($4.50):
- A mound of braised yam rice (芋头饭) — that signature savoury brown rice infused with the duck braising gravy, with bits of yam mixed in.
- Generous slices of braised duck breast fanned over the top — properly dark caramelised skin, tender meat soaked through with five-spice, with extra gravy drizzled on the rice.
- A piece of braised tau kwa (firm beancurd) at the side — soaked in the same gravy, slightly chewy on the outside.
- Two slices of fresh cucumber for the palate refresh.
The duck slices were extra generous today — almost completely covered the rice mound. That’s the kind of portion that makes a $4.50 plate feel like restaurant quality. The yam rice is the unsung hero of any Teochew duck rice plate — already savoury on its own, then the gravy makes it irresistible.
Total: $4.50. Hawker pricing for an upgraded portion.
Overall: 4.4 / 5. Duck was tender (not dry, common pitfall), gravy was properly herbal without being too sweet, yam rice carried the whole plate. The kind of meal where you wish the rice came in bigger portion. Will be back. 😍👍🏼
