Mid week dinner ($12.40)!
Somerset Japanese mid-week dinner spread for $12.40 — donburi-style rice bowl and side that proves you can eat well on a weeknight budget.
Wednesday post-work dinner with BB at a Somerset Japanese spot. Mid-week we don’t have the energy for anything elaborate, and $12.40 for a hot bowl that hits is exactly the right move.
We ordered:
- Donburi rice bowl
- Side
- Drink
Total: $12.40.
The donburi was a generous portion — fluffy short-grain rice topped with a glossy Japanese sauce that picked up colour as it soaked in, with protein piled on and a soft egg yolk sitting in the middle. Standard donburi formula, executed clean — rice cooked well, protein not dry, sauce sweet-soy balanced without being too heavy.
Side was a small bowl that came with the set — miso soup or salad depending on the day. Both reliable as a palate cleanser between mouthfuls of the main.
Somerset’s weekday dinner energy is one of the calmer parts of the Orchard belt — after-work crowd starts thinning by 8pm and you can usually get a table without a wait. The Japanese spot we hit was a small chain, the kind with picture menus and an iPad ordering system.
At $12.40 with a drink in the Orchard area, this is the kind of weekday dinner that competes with hawker pricing while delivering sit-down comfort.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid mid-week call — would absolutely repeat after work.
