家乡面馆 (Hometown Noodle House) at Boon Keng — XLB, beef noodles, zhajiang mian ($4 + $4.50 + $4)!
家乡面馆 Hometown Noodle House at Boon Keng — xiao long bao ($4), beef knife-cut noodles ($4.50) and zhajiang mian ($4). Three plates for two.
Lunch with BB at 家乡面馆 (Hometown Noodle House) in Boon Keng — went for the three signature plates. 😋
What we ordered ($12.50 total):
- A bamboo steamer of 小笼包 (xiao long bao, $4) — six plump pleated dumplings sitting on parchment paper, thin skin, soup waiting to burst inside.
- A bowl of 牛肉刀削面 (beef knife-cut noodles, $4.50) — thick chewy hand-shaved noodles in a clear, peppery beef broth with tender braised beef chunks and bok choy.
- A bowl of 炸酱面 (zhajiang mian, $4) — yellow noodles topped with dark fermented bean sauce + minced pork and a generous pile of fresh julienned cucumber for the cool contrast.
Mixed the zhajiang noodles together — the bean sauce coated each strand with that signature umami fermented punch. XLB soup was hot and properly broth-y inside.
Total: $12.50 for three plates.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. Beef noodles were the best of the three — proper knife-cut bite, clear broth. XLB skins could’ve been thinner but the soup was good. Reliable Boon Keng noodle stop. 😍👍🏼
