Braised duck rice + tau kwa at a hawker stall ($4)!
Hawker Teochew braised duck rice with tau kwa, braised yam rice, side soup and cucumber. $4.
Another braised duck rice run โ this time with tau kwa added at the side. $4. ๐
What was on the red plate ($4):
- A bed of braised yam rice (่ๅคด้ฅญ) โ savoury brown rice infused with the herbal braising gravy.
- A fan of sliced braised duck breast โ that signature dark caramelised skin, properly soaked through with five-spice gravy.
- Sliced tau kwa (braised firm beancurd) โ soaked in the same dark sauce, slightly chewy crust.
- Two slices of fresh cucumber for the palate refresh.
- A small side dish of bright orange chilli sauce with shredded ginger for the kick.
- A side bowl of clear braising broth with chopped scallions.
The braised rice was the standout โ proper yam rice with the gravy infused throughout. Tau kwa soaked up the sauce beautifully.
Total: $4. Hawker pricing.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. Better than the average duck rice โ the tau kwa was the bonus. Duck wasnโt dry. Rice was the highlight. ๐๐๐ผ
