Shiok maki gen 1 & 2, fried yaki udon, chawanmushi x2 ($54.14)!
Japanese restaurant dinner spread — shiok maki gen 1 & 2, fried yaki udon, two chawanmushi. $54.14 for the share platter.
Friday dinner with BB at a Japanese restaurant — went hard with a full share platter spread. The shiok maki generation 1 and 2 are the menu signatures, plus we threw in yaki udon and a double chawanmushi because BB and I always order them separately so neither of us has to share.
We ordered:
- Shiok maki gen 1
- Shiok maki gen 2
- Fried yaki udon
- Chawanmushi
- Chawanmushi
Total: $54.14 for the spread.
Shiok maki gen 1 is the original — California-roll base of crab stick and avocado, topped with torched salmon mayo and a sweet eel sauce drizzle. Generous slices, glossy salmon torch char, the kind of fusion roll that doesn’t apologise for being indulgent.
Shiok maki gen 2 is the upgrade — aburi-torched salmon on top with a soft-boiled quail egg and tobiko (flying fish roe), with truffle mayo on the side. More decadent, more visually busy, more crowd-pleasing.
Yaki udon was the hot main — thick wheat noodles stir-fried in a soy-based sauce with cabbage, carrot, mushroom, scallion and a touch of sesame oil. Wok hei was present, and the noodles had the right slippery-chewy texture.
Chawanmushi (each) was the silky egg custard with shimeji mushroom, sliced prawn, chicken, and a few scallop bits, steamed in a small cup with a dashi base. Soft, savoury, palate-cleansing between the heavier rolls.
$54.14 for two on a full Japanese spread is fair mid-tier restaurant pricing.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid Japanese share dinner — would absolutely revisit.
