Bangkok lunch — Wanton noodles + pork (3 pax: THB $600)!
Bangkok ba mee gieow — wanton noodles + roast pork sharing platter for 3 pax, THB $600. Thai-Chinese stall classic from the famous noodle row.
Bangkok holiday day two lunch — pulled the group to one of the famous Thai-Chinese ba mee (wanton noodle) stalls, the kind that’s been running since the 1960s and has photos of celebrity visitors on the walls.
We ordered (sharing for 3 pax):
- Wanton noodles (3 bowls)
- Roast pork platter
- Crispy pork belly
- Soup wantons
Total: THB $600 (~SGD $26).
Ba mee gieow is Bangkok’s wanton noodle equivalent — thin springy egg noodles tossed in light garlic oil with a dash of soy, topped with sliced char siew, a few wonton dumplings, blanched chinese kale, and crispy garlic. Different from the Singapore version: lighter sauce, more aromatic, less sweet.
The roast pork platter was the star. Crisp crackling on the siew yoke (siu yuk in Thai-Chinese), proper rendering of the fat layer underneath, smoky char siew slices, and pieces of liver and intestine for those who go full nose-to-tail. Served with a vinegar-and-chilli dipping sauce.
Crispy pork belly — thick slabs, glass-shattering crackle on top, juicy underneath. The shop fries them to order in front of you.
Soup wantons came in a clear pork broth with the same wonton wrappers and prawn-and-pork filling as the dry noodle version.
THB $600 for three is wildly cheap for the spread — Singapore equivalent would be at least double.
Overall: 4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Honest Bangkok noodle stall — would absolutely revisit.
