Hup Chong Hakka Yong Tau Fu!

Hup Chong Hakka Yong Tau Fu at Toa Payoh: DIY Hakka YTF at $0.60 a piece, the fried items (meatball, ngoh hiang, tofu) the highlight. One of our favourites.

Hup Chong Hakka Yong Tau Fu!

One of our favourite Hakka Yong Tau Fu stalls in Singapore! ๐Ÿ˜‹

Yong tau foo (้…ฟ่ฑ†่…) is the Hakka stuffing tradition, โ€œyongโ€ meaning to stuff, where tofu and vegetables are packed with a hand-chopped fish-and-pork paste. Hup Chong runs the proper Hakka version, and the pick-your-own format lets you build your own plate from the fridge of stuffed items.

The fried ingredients are highly recommended, especially the meatball, ngoh hiang and tofu! The frying is where a good YTF stall shows itself: the fried items should be crisp and golden on the outside while the paste inside stays bouncy and juicy. Hup Chongโ€™s fried pieces have that proper crunch-to-bounce ratio, which is exactly why we keep coming back.

$0.60 per piece with a minimum of 6 pieces, the classic DIY YTF pricing, so you control both the plate and the budget. Order it dry with the sweet sauce and chilli, or in soup; the fried items hold up best on the dry toss.

A small, no-frills neighbourhood stall doing one thing properly, the kind of reliable Hakka YTF that earns regulars rather than queues.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ The crisp fried meatball, ngoh hiang and tofu are the standouts. One of our favourite Hakka YTF, would re-visit.
