Two budget hawker desserts: a red ruby shaved ice with sago and attap chee, and a grass jelly bowl with chewy jellies. $4.50 for both.
A pair of old-school hawker desserts to cool down with BB: $2 and $2.50, so $4.50 for both. π
What we had:
- A red ruby shaved ice: a mound of fine shaved ice drenched in rosy-red syrup, with sago pearls and chewy attap chee (palm seeds)
- A grass jelly bowl: dark herbal jelly cubes with translucent jellies and attap chee in a sweet syrup
The red shaved ice was the prettier of the two, that classic ang moh / rose-syrup look, a fluffy hill of ice soaking up the sweet syrup, with bouncy little sago pearls and soft, chewy attap chee hiding underneath. Spoon it up fast before it melts and it is pure, simple refreshment for a hot day.
The grass jelly was the one I gravitated to: those wobbly, faintly bittersweet cubes of chin chow have a cooling, herbal note that grown-ups love, and mixed with the springy clear jellies and syrup, it is light and not too sugary. Just the thing after a heavier meal.
Two humble, nostalgic bowls, the kind of cheap-and-cheerful dessert that has cooled down generations of Singaporeans. At $4.50 for both, you canβt really go wrong.
