Fried porridge ($7) & Hokkien mee ($6)!
A tze char dinner: a creamy claypot fried porridge with lard and fried shallots, and a plate of dark KL-style Hokkien mee. $13.
A comforting tze char dinner with BB: fried porridge ($7) and Hokkien mee ($6). ๐
What we had ($13 total):
- Fried porridge: a claypot of creamy, savoury porridge topped with fried shallots, crispy lard, spring onion and bits of seafood
- Hokkien mee: dark, dry-fried noodles served on a banana leaf
The fried porridge was the one Iโd come back for. Unlike a plain soupy congee, this one is cooked down in a claypot until it turns thick, creamy and almost risotto-like, with a deep savoury flavour and that lovely golden colour. It is finished with crispy fried shallots and nuggets of pork lard for crunch and richness, plus spring onion and seafood worked through. Spoonful after spoonful of pure comfort, and the claypot keeps it piping hot.
The Hokkien mee here was the dark, KL-leaning style: thick noodles wok-fried in a glossy black soy sauce with lard and greens, so they come out smoky, savoury and a little sticky rather than soupy. A completely different beast from the wet Singapore version, and a good one.
Two hearty, contrasting plates, one creamy and one dark and smoky, that made a really satisfying tze char meal. At $13 for the pair, lovely value.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ A rich, creamy claypot fried porridge and smoky dark Hokkien mee, comforting and great value. Would re-order.
