经济米粉 ($4.30)!

A classic neighbourhood lunch, a plate of 经济米粉 (economic bee hoon) for $4.30. 😋

What we had:

Economic bee hoon is the build-your-own breakfast-into-lunch plate every heartland coffee shop does: a base of fried bee hoon and you point at the toppings you want from the tray. This plate had soft, lightly seasoned vermicelli with a heap of stir-fried cabbage for sweetness, and on top a good pick of fried bits.

The fried sides are the fun: golden fish fritters, a couple of crisp prawn fritters, and a slab of tau kwa (firm beancurd), each one adding its own crunch and savour to the soft noodles. A spoon of the sweet chilli sauce on the side ties it all together with a little tang and heat.

It is simple, affordable, endlessly customisable eating, exactly what the “economic” name promises. Pick a few things you like, pay a few dollars, and you have a satisfying plate. Comfort food that never goes wrong.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Soft fried bee hoon with sweet cabbage and a good pick of crispy fried sides. Would re-order.
