Grilled eel don & Aburi wagyu beef don (Burpple Beyond: $20++)!
Two premium donburi on Burpple Beyond: a glazed grilled eel don (unadon) and an aburi wagyu beef don with an onsen egg. $20++.
A treat-yourself Japanese dinner with BB, kept affordable by Burpple Beyond 1-for-1: a grilled eel don and an aburi wagyu beef don for an effective $20++. ๐
What we had:
- Grilled eel don (unadon): fillets of glazed grilled eel over rice, with sesame and pickles
- Aburi wagyu beef don: torched wagyu beef over rice with an onsen egg, shredded nori, spring onion and pickles
The unadon was the one Iโd come back for. The eel was grilled kabayaki-style, brushed with that sweet-savoury tare until it caramelised into a glossy, lacquered finish, then laid over rice so the sauce soaks down into the grains. The flesh underneath stays soft and rich, and a scatter of sesame adds a toasty note. Comfort food at its most indulgent.
The aburi wagyu beef don was the other kind of luxurious. The wagyu is lightly torched so the marbling just begins to melt, leaving the beef warm, soft and beautifully fatty, and breaking the onsen egg over it makes everything richer and silkier, with the nori and pickles cutting through.
Two genuinely premium bowls, eel and wagyu, for an effective $20 on the deal. That is the kind of value that makes Burpple Beyond worth it.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Glossy glazed eel and melt-in-the-mouth torched wagyu with a runny egg, indulgent and great value. Would re-do.
